Really interesting and worth a visit Who would have thought that fish skins could be put to use as leather products? I was really fascinated that a product which would otherwise be waste material could be put to a functional use. Worthwhile educational visit and so pleased that we took the time to go. Wonderful product and it's use is really only limited by your imagination.

Fascinating local business story Definitely worth a trip if you are in the Esperance area. The co-owner Dave tells you the story of the company and their development of the fish leather tannery. Delightfully local and small-scale, the shop sells a range of fish leather products/souveniers and has a range of interesting exhibits including shark skulls and tannery equipment. Dave is a real Aussie character and tells a great story.

Amazing Workshop to visit! This family-inspired and run business is well worth checking out. The owner shows videos of how the business came to be and what the process is to actually create fish leather! He is very engaging to listen to and is passionate about his craft! I wish I could have seen an item from his 'shop' to purchase but it wasn't my style. I did buy a piece of leather to take back to show my school students. Free to visit but check out his opening hours as there is a closed time around midday.

Unique experience and education An eye opener to what innovated people can do. All credit to this business which turns the scales and skins of sharks, stingrays and fish into works of art, be it useful or decorative. A visit to this factory, or the town craft market shop near the Information Centre is a must for visitors in the Esperance region. In each place we were able to converse freely with highly passionate and dedicated craftspeople. We came away richer for the experience. We appreciate that we now have a few mementos that are unique and useful and are value for money in the true sense. Thank you Mermaid Leather.

Welcome To Mermaid Leather

Australia’s only specialist fish and shark leather tannery . . . born in the Golden Outback of Western Australia.

From the ocean and outback estuaries to fashion houses, Mermaid Leather produces unique, aesthetically appealing and strong fish and shark leather. Designers throughout Australia have embraced the delicate pattern of fish leather for its soft sensual texture yet robust strength.

Established in 1989 in the pristine coastal Golden Outback town of Esperance, Western Australia, two local fishermen saw a need to recycle skins from the fish processing food industry. This environmentally friendly philosophy and sustainable outlook is the anchor behind Mermaid’s family run business that prides itself on its exclusive handcrafted fish leather.

Visitors to Esperance can enjoy a relaxed visit to our studio enhanced by a multimedia presentation to discover the exciting process of tanning wild caught and farmed Barramundi, Snapper, Groper and Shark. Larger groups need to book in advance for a personalised tour of the factory for a minimal fee.

Our Mermaid Leather studio showcases quality handbags, wallets and leather accessories made under contract by Australian designers. We also produce a range of affordable fish leather gifts and souvenirs in our studio workshop. We welcome all Australian and International wholesale enquiries for our fish and shark leather products, offering exclusivity for select customers.
